Really Great

(+ 0.036)

I must say, although I've always enjoyed your cartoons and have always admired your frame by frame Hulalaoo, this was outstanding work.

The sound fit perfectly, the sound effects were necessary and suspenseful and really added depth to the cartoon. Most people that do music videos (or use music to their animation) don't add sound effects. In this case it only enhanced the experience.

The plot was a cliche anime of people fighting in robots and you pulled it off very well. You actually made the fight scene between the two fast, intense, and actually kept me interested. Most people who try to do giant robot fights make it slow and clunky, with a lot of dialogue.

The thing I admire most, and the thing that this was about, was the animation. I was seriously wow'd when I watched it. Not only is the frame by frame excellent, the line work is as well, not to mentioned you've shaded the entire thing. It looks TV quality if not better. You only improve every time you do a cartoon man, and I'm being honest when I say you're becoming amazing.

Enough dick-suckery.

10/10 man, seriously awesome job. I look forward to future projects of yours.

Nice Job Dood

Nice job dude.

The art style was NICE AND SMOOTH for my taste, all of the lines looked really good and the color choice was fun to look at, with the lack of backgrounds that is. The grey backgrounds only work, I think, if the characters too are very simplistic and have no color. It worked alright for this since the focus is on the characters and writing rather than the backgrounds or artwork. I always love your style, though.

The animation was also extremely smooth and pleasant to look at as always. Your frame by frame and easing is getting extremely good man. Even simple hand movements look great. Great on the animation aspect as always.

The audio aspect was also nice. You and Max both had good microphones, they were nice and clear, and no pops or anything. The little loop is also enjoyable.

The writing aspect is probably why I reviewed this. If this was scripted it would probably lose it's touch to me. Max's extreme up forward dialogue actually made it a bit funny. Not often people use the word cunt or fuck so nonchalantly. Fantasia and Yotam's responses were funny and made for a fun time. I actually didn't laugh at loud but this is really enjoyable. I've ended up watching it like 5 times. I wouldn't expect anyones improve to be laugh out loud funny, so don't take that personally. The punch line was also great for improv.

One small thing that bothered me was the lip synch. I brought this up in a previous video. It appears to be a loop of lips. I can see obvious points when they say "F" or "L" and it matches, but other times it seems a bit random. Try to make the tongue stick out more when they say "th" or make the tongue more visible when they say "L", and so on. It really adds a lot to the movie, although it seems rather insignificant. That is really the only problem I had wiff dis.

I took off a few points because of the length. It was a little bit too short, but I'm also sort of half being a hypocrite. I'm glad you didn't keep going after the punch line, it would have ruined it. Some cartoons do that. I'd rather something be too short than too long. If it's too short, it means people wanted more. If people are complaining it was too long, that probably isn't a great thing.

So good job overall man, I really enjoyed it.

Also, did you add in Yotam's lines over after the whole thing was recorded?

LazyMuffin responds:

Thanks for the great comment.

The questions were done in real time, but 80% of the reactions were added later on. This went through heavy editing, hopefully it's not that noticeable.

Christ Jesus

At first I thought the initial punch line was just the kid saying; "I want to smoke crack", and if it would have ended there, no doubt would the score be lower.

The animation was fairly good, a bit choppy at a few points, and the hands sometimes bothered me, but other than that, the animation was pretty good.

The artwork I did like. The colors were nice and vibrant, and the character design was pleasant to look at. It was overall very nice.

The voices and sound was also very well done! The voices, I think, made it a lot funnier. They were very clear and funny.

The script is where I love this. The writing is absolutely funny man, when the homeless guy started shitting I lost it. I actually laughed out loud. The only thing that killed it a bit for me was the kid shouting; "I don't wanna smoke crack!". I personally would have just had the kid crying and the old guy shitting everywhere, but that's just me. It made me laugh regardless.

Nicely done man, I hope to see more from you in the future.

BillyNapalm responds:

Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! You also spotted a huge weakness of mine - I can't draw hands. It's pretty embarrassing too, considering I have two reference models right in front of me at all times.

Awesome Work

This was actually really entertaining.

The animation is where I give you guys kudos, because honestly, even though it was a bit overly tweened for my taste, you made it work. The quality looked almost to the par of Television! The artwork is in the same vein for me, I loved the style, especially the hands for some reason. Sometimes the faces bothered me, and I'm not sure exactly why. But for the most part I loved the unique style.

The music was very fitting for this and you used it at the perfect times that you should have. The voices were pretty good overall and suited the characters quite well. The dialogue was believable and entertaining. Only issue I had with the audio was at a few small spots there was a lack of sound or music, and it was a bit awkward. When things would crash or people would do something, I was expecting a sound effect, even a subtle one, but it was dead silent. That is the only problem I had with the audio, something very small but I thought I should point it out for future projects.

The writing is where I get a bit upset about this whole thing. I reviewed in the first place because the animation was really eye catching and great, but when watching it I couldn't help but feel like it was missing something.

Flash cartoons really abide by the same rules as video games and movies. That is, even if the movie/video game has awesome effects, actors, etc, the movie/game can still be poorly done JUST because of story or the writing.

Don't get me wrong, the writing was average, but the jokes and especially the punch line is where it lacked the most for me. Using the word "butt" felt really awkward for some reason to me. The fact that there was minimal blood from the bullet wound was also a bit strange to watch. The story was really scattered to me, and I was a bit confused when watching. I mean, I knew what was going on, but it just felt like this happens, then this happens, etc. No rhythm to the writing, and I predicted the ending from the start when Pico was overly concerned about his birthday getting screwed up.

I did, however, love the JohnnyUtah joke about him having his hands blocking his face the whole time, that gave me a smile. Other than that small gag, I didn't grin once. I enjoyed this a great deal, but didn't think it was funny.

In my opinion, if you're going to go for funny, go at it as hard as you can, or the whole thing feels a bit awkward to watch. I knew you were making jokes but didn't find them all that appealing. Other than that, great job.

Keep up the excellent work man.

boybogart responds:

I totally agree with you and would probably think the same way if I were to watch this. Up until I joined NG, I was just an animator so you can say that I rarely got the pratice to write stuff. But I am trying to learn something new everyday especially in writing. Appreciate the constructive review man!

I Was Going to Leave You a Massive Review...

But I decided not too.

There's so little to complain about, so I'll make this quick.

The animation and art was, subtly put, fucking amazing. The FBF in this one was not only the best in "Leo & Satan", but in your entire animation career man.

The backgrounds were simply amazing also, BRAWVO to sucho. But she always does a brilliant job so it comes as no surprise the artwork was amazing.

The music, sound effects, and voices flowed perfectly. Especially the characters voices getting very over-dramatically involved.

Like I said the music was phenomenal as always.

The story and script is where some people are beginning to complain.

Let me clarify something. This episode is hilarious, simply put. People are getting confused, though. The humor is not less in this episode, rather, DIFFERENT than previous episodes. This is a different comedic style than the ones used in previous episodes. The jokes and gags are all hilarious, and I actually found myself laughing out loud just as much, IF NOT THE SAME as in previous episodes. So great job there man.

Overall, essentially flawless.

Thatta Girl

This is one of the most accurate depictions of Newgrounds I've seen.

You nailed Toms voice.

I love you.

Smorgishmorg responds:

I am a man.

Yes

I haven't laughed that hard in a long time.

The animation was very nice, quite outstanding for being done in only two days! It was fluid and enjoyable, I can really say I loved it.

The voice acting by Hans had me in stitches. I almost fell out of my chair at the end when the guy was crying and being fucked by the dog. The women just runs off, and the man makes no effort to move. The womens voice was exceptionally hilarious and believable. Great as always.

The music was very fitting to the movie and tone of the situation and it really helped with the overall punch line. Very nice job with this.

I also really enjoyed the art style. The character designs were unique and refreshing, really something I enjoyed.

The script and plot were simply amazing. Everything working together in this so nicely is what makes it so hilarious. I've probably watched this three times. Really, really good job on this. This is what the Movie Jam is about.

AlmightyHans responds:

AWWWW thanks dude! you're too much.

Honestly?

I know for a fact this will be marked as abusive, or useless, because I'm giving you actual criticism and actually analyzing the flash, not giving you a mindless 10.

The animation was horrid. Not bad, but horrid. If this was your first submission to Newgrounds I would say otherwise, but you've been submitting stuff since 2006. That's nearly 5 years. I'd think you'd improve the plot, humor, backgrounds, voices, character designs, animations. No. Not even a little bit.

Let me put this in perspective. Happy Harry has been submitting since 2004. Look how much he's improved. Oney has been submitting since 2006. Look how much he's improved. Egoraptor, 2005. Hire a new animator.

As far as the art goes, not even slightly pleasing. The character designs are strange. The fingers and hands become deformed and mutilated. All of the character retain the exact same pose, except for when they move their arms. In which case there isn't even frame by frame animation leading up to that frame. Not even inbetweens. Tweening is the most simplistic animation style and yet you choose not even to do that.

The lines are very sloppy, and the backgrounds are painful to look at. I hate to come off as being mean, but work on the lines. There is a tool in Flash called "smoothen". I suggest you watch JohnnyUtah's last two cartoons about lines and color, it would help you out a lot. Look at some animation tutorials here on Newgrounds and on Youtube, they're helpful and easy to learn.

The script was also not funny at all. I mean, it felt like a real show, which I do admire. The character interaction was all right, but the comedy just wasn't their for me. A parody is a good one time thing. But having an entire series as a parody just loses it's touch and becomes extremely dull and repetitive.

The sound quality was actually superb for the most part. Egoraptors microphone was nice, but some characters voices were a bit echoy and didn't match the rest of the characters.

Honestly man. It's been almost 5 years, improve. Actually try. It sickens me you put almost zero effort into your cartoons and steal the awards from people that actually try, and what sickens me more is that you know you can. You have no intention of reading this comment or actually improving anything ever.

Good luck in the future.

Psychicpebble:

Thank you very much for your honest and reasonable criticisms. I am the animator/writer of Press Start Adventures. But the truth is I am a writer first and an artist... well... maybe fourth or fifth. Please know that we do read and pay close attention to feedback, but Newgrounds is just one venue for Press Start and we're all very busy. We appreciate and respect everyone's opinion.

I have always thought it would be fantastic to revamp PSA's style to be prettier, smoother, etc. However at this time it's impractical for logistical and budgetary reasons for Dark Maze Studios to bring in another animator. This utilitarian copy & paste strategy has really worked for PSA for so long, because it allows us to keep a monthly schedule, and keep our audience entertained regularly. A more detailed style would mean way fewer cartoons. In fact if it hadn't been for the "rough around the edges" style, the show probably never would have taken off at all. But many cartoons have used still models, talking heads, recycling, and simplicity to improve productivity; choosing instead to pour more energy into dialogue and character.

Animation is very important, I agree. But in the world of comedy you can cheat a little and distract people with humor so that they forget about the ugly drawings. It's not right or wrong, it's just up to the individual. Please know that we're definitely not out to steal awards or take credit away from the many talented animators here on Newgrounds. We just want to entertain... on a budget.

Press Start is a highly collaborative process and the animation is really just one piece of the puzzle. If anyone's interested I have a recent blog post that gives a solid overview of how we make a PSA episode start to finish. It's more about the writing process than the sound or animation, but it covers a lot of ground.

Holy shit I actually affected the score.

Anyways, now onto the massive amazing sexifying review full of explosions.

The writing was hysterical, and once again I found myself laughing at loud. Although I only laughed aloud a few times, I was grinning the entire time. I really enjoyed the twist of Tom being the bad guy for once and Zanta having to team up with Edd and Matt to defeat Tom. The comedy and writing felt fresh and never got repetitive, there was always something to grab my attention.

The artwork itself was beautiful yet very simple. Simple design is good if used properly, and I must say, you've nailed it quite well. The backgrounds and special effects were also wonderful. I really do admire how you pulled off explosions, fire, etc, because it's some of the hardest things to animate.

Animation wise, it was very good. You've improved a lot in the last few years especially on the animation aspect. I really love how you've managed to make the characters always doing something interesting or moving. The shaky effect is also pleasant, along with jaw movements whilst they're talking. You may have been doing that for a while, but I just now picked it up. I also liked the bits of frame by frame like during Tom's montage and Zanta burying himself.

The voices were also spectacular although you've never really had an issue with them. I really enjoyed the song which I think is a first for Eddsworld. I'm not sure and feel free to correct me. You pulled that off quite nicely. Props to Joshua for being so into character and hilarious.

I think that about covers it in my shitty review. Anyways, in short, nice job man. You've improved a lot and I like where Eddsworld is turning now.

keep it up eddy-pies :3

eddsworld responds:

Yay big review! I'm really glad you liked it!

You Can Do Better

I'm going to be completely honest with you.

I know you didn't animate it, so this is basically two reviews. One for sh0t-d0wN and one for you.

As per sh0t, you did an excellent job. The animation and facial expression were completely on par and expressed the characters very nicely. There weren't really any backgrounds, which was okay because you were basing this off of the commercial which didn't have any backgrounds. The characters looked very similar to their commercial counterpart and the lip snych was wonderful.

Good as always.

Now, this part is for you Nick. I really hate to be so brutally honest, but I felt I should leave a review so you could stop next time and honestly think about it before you record or submit it. I understand the joke, and have actually had ideas of my own to do a parody of this commercial. I also understand the joke here, but I'm being honest, I didn't laugh one time. I didn't even crack a smile. I was sitting there waiting. The only times I did grin or enjoy it was due to the animation done by sh0t.

The writing dragged on, and there wasn't really a punch-line. A punch-line is a quick one liner or basically what the cartoon is building up to. It often times ends the joke, or in this case the movie. The only mild "punch-line" i could find was the owl slitting his throat at the end. It was not climactic at ALL. Just completely random penis and vomit jokes. I mean if you would have cut off with the kid interupting the owl masturbating THAT would have been better. It dragged on and I was waiting for something interesting to happen.

I wouldn't mind it dragging on if it wasn't so repetitive. That was the worst part about it. The jokes were literally repeating over and over. I felt like I watched the same movie about 10 times. The turtle throws up and is a pedophile. The owl screams and cusses. We get the idea. I understand what you said before about you only cussing "for the owls character", but that can't be your scape goat. It was plain bad script writing. Especially screaming. If you're going to do a screaming scene, at least go straight from complete calmness to absolute chaos and screaming. Don't keep shouting into the mic and cussing, it gets really and and stale after about 15 seconds.

Before you write another long parody or spoof, please, I ask you, don't let it be this receptive. Get straight to the punch line and don't do "build ups" to absolutely nothing. Shock humor didn't work at all in this case. And that's the issue with shock humor - if it fails, it fails extremely horribly. It seems the only jokes were masturbation, pedophilia, and random vomiting. Alone and used correctly these jokes can be somewhat humorous, but shock humor IS NOT meant to be dragged on for 11 minutes.

Please, don't think this review was out of anger or I'm being a prick. Take it as criticism. Your voice acting was good as always, just work on the script writing a little bit. I wish you the best of luck on future projects.

FatKidWitAJetPak responds:

I really do appreciate the review man, and thanks for the comments. Everyone is entitles to their opinion, and you obviously looked more into the perspective of "This is just cursing and vomiting jokes", as many do. Those who look at it as a psychopathic montage really laugh at the whole idea of it.

The thing is, I wasn't trying to be organized with this. I wanted this to be, for the most part, a CRAZY cartoon with absurd humor and questioning dialogue. It isn't in everyones taste, of course, but I am very proud of what Sh0t-D0wn and I have put together.

The owl screams and curses because... well, he is on the path to insanity because this kid has come ot him CONSTANTLY and bothered him. The turtle throws up because he has mongolian erectile dysfunction. The movie "drags on" because I wanted to give the world a bit more depth, showing what the characters have to go through. I don't consider it "repetitive", I only consider it "perspective".

Thanks for the compliments on my voice acting and on Sh0t-D0wns amazing artistic talents. As for this being "shock humor" it was never intended as being one, but as being an in depth dark comedy cartoon.
